Whilst you don’t really have to do a lot before an MOT test, we certainly recommend some of the following steps to give you the best chance of passing it first time. Although it’s not an issue if you do fail, there are some points of the test where you can fail on something avoidable. At Gary Pinkard, we perform all the repairs necessary for a pass and give advice if that’s not possible, so you don’t have to stress. If you want a head start though, read on to find out what you can do in preparation.
Clean Your Car
It’s not necessary to get a full valet before an MOT test. However, it is nice to have a tidy environment for technicians to complete work. Also, if the outside of your vehicle is caked in dirt and your number plate is covered, this should be cleaned prior to the appointment. This could result in a fail. What’s more, having an illegible number plate on the roads could result in a hefty fine, so you’ll want to get that sorted as soon as possible.
Your vehicle can fail its MOT test on simple details like bulbs not working. Before the assessment, take some time to check the lights on your vehicle. Whilst operating the switches, get a friend to walk around and observe if any are not working properly.
Look At Tyres
Having inadequate tyres are a common MOT test failure that can easily be check before a test. They have to be in a certain condition in order to pass. It’s important to make sure they aren’t damaged and don’t have any cuts or bulges. There’s also a legal minimum tread depth that they should meet. The tread should be no less than 1.6mm around the central 3/4s all around the tyre.
You can easily measure this yourself using a 20p coin. Simply place it in the tread. If you can see the outer rim, it means the tread is far too small and new tyres are required. You can get this sorted out prior to the test, or before a retest.
